2010 - Elizabeth Gaskell’s bicentennial

This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s best loved writers - Elizabeth Gaskell. A series of events are underway to mark the event, culminating in her name being added to Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. She was a contemporary of Dickens and a close personal friend of Charlotte Bronte. Her work has reached an ever growing public following hugely successful adaptations of her novels ‘Cranford’ and ‘North and South’ on the ´óÏó´«Ã½. But what is her place in the canon of English Literature and what of the woman herself?
