Asian women in the听theatre. 27听Feb 2009
Are Asian women in theatre today the 鈥淎ngry Young Men鈥 of the 1960s.

The Angry Young Men were a group of British writers who emerged in the 1950s and revolted against social attitudes and the establishment of the time, through works like Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim and John Osborne's Look Back in Anger. Now, according to artistic director Janet Steel, it鈥檚 South Asian women in Britain who are the Angry Young Men of our time. They鈥檙e writing plays and using the stage as their platform to shine a light on their own communities as well as looking outwards to explore world issues such as food shortages and identity cards. But is it possible to create political theatre that鈥檚 appealing to the masses and how can Asian actors move away from stereotypical roles while still highlighting political issues? Jenni is joined by Kali Theatre Company鈥檚 Artistic Director Janet Steel and by actress Meera Syal, who is perhaps the most prominent Asian actress in Britain.
