Social
Sexism and the City - Maternity Rights 21 Oct听2009
How maternity rights听impact on women鈥檚 success at work.

This week the Treasury Committee has been looking at how women are treated in the City of London and other high financial businesses. Among other issues, they have discussed whether听maternity rights have听gone too far. The law gives special protection to pregnant women at work; they have rights to paid time off for antenatal care, statutory maternity leave and may get maternity pay or a maternity allowance. But what effect do听maternity rights have on women鈥檚 success at work? Do they risk backfiring on women and听what鈥檚 the impact on the employer and other employees? Jenni is joined by Sarah Veale,听Head of Equality and Employment Rights at the TUC and Catherine Hakim, Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the LSE.
