What happens when they move from child to adult services?
There are over 600,000 disabled young people between the age of 14 and 25 years in the UK and the number is growing. Many wish to lead independent lives as they reach adulthood but a new report shows that help varies widely, that many young people and their parents feel isolated and unsupported in the move from child to adult services, and that charities are plugging the gaps in government provision. Jane speaks to Anna Gill whose son was born with a life limiting condition.听 He was offered care at a nursing home for elderly people when he decided that he wanted to leave home at the age of 18.听听Also joining Jane is听Clare Yeowart, author of the report Rights of Passage from the think tank New Philanthropy Capital and听Helen Wheatley, Director of the National Transition Support Team from the Council for Disabled Children. |
