Women Prisoners 26 Nov 2009
Women in the criminal justice system

Over two years ago Baroness Corston published her report into women in the criminal justice system. At the heart of the report was a number of proposals to reduce the number of women in prison. Custodial sentences should only be reserved for serious and violent offenders who pose a threat to the public and women unlikely to receive a custodial sentence should not be remanded in custody. And community sentences for non violent women offenders should be the norm. Despite the Government鈥檚 acceptance of nearly all of the recommendations, the female prison population has increased by a quarter over the past decade, and it has recently been reported that the number of women held in prison last year was the highest on record.听To discuss the implementation of the Corston Report Jane is joined by Frances Crook from The Howard League for Penal Reform and Maria Eagle, Justice Minister.
