The extended school day 08 Jan 2010
School playground
Should the school day be extended to ten hours?

Should the school day be increased to 10 hours? It’s been done in parts of America with startling results… the number of children in poorer areas going to college has increased from 10 to 80 per cent. Now there are plans to introduce similar schools in Britain – targeted at those from economically deprived backgrounds. But is it right for children to be at school for 10 hours a day, and is the scheme an unfair criticism of parents, with its implicit suggestion they’re not spending enough time reading with their kids, or encouraging them to get on?
