Salford's Birth Control Clinic |
13 Apr 2006 |

Eighty years ago a group of women set up the first free birth control clinic in the north of England. Based in Salford it was housed above a pie shop and very near to the Catholic Cathedral. Despite intense opposition from the Church and even parts of the medical profession, thousands of women passed through the clinic's doors, desperate to limit their families. Inspired by Marie Stopes in London who had founded the country's first clinic in 1921, the driving force behind the Salford clinic were two women, Mary Stocks and Charis Frankenberg. |
