Rugs 12听July 2007
Jill Hopkins visits the collection at Beamish Museum, County Durham.

There was a time when a mother making her porridge would be standing on a rag rug in front of the hearth. Made of hessian and scraps of old cloth, these rag rugs were a good way of re-cycling old clothes and provided a cosy space on the stone flags. But they were also tainted by poverty and eventually lost out to prosperity and fitted carpets.听Now there's a bit of a resurgence, and these humble peg rugs have become works of art in their own right.听听 Beamish Museum in County Durham has one of the finest collections and the senior Keeper is Rosemary Allen. Reporter, Jill Hopkins, went to meet her and Maureen Green, who holds rag rug workshops for local schoolchildren in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
