Child trafficking in Benin 24 Jul 2007
What's being done to tackle the flourishing trade in West Africa?

The West African Republic of Benin briefly grabbed headlines in 2003 when a ship was discovered trafficking children to work as labourers and domestic servants in Gabon. The investigations that followed revealed a flourishing trade, involving an estimated 200,000 West and Central African children a year. Although the Benin government passed听its first anti-trafficking law last year, UNICEF听remains concerned about the scale of听child trafficking in Benin.听

Reporter Angela Robson spoke to Rita, who was trafficked from Alada, in central Benin, when she was seven years old.
