Jewish Mothers 29 May听2009
We unravel the stereotype of the Jewish Mother

The Jewish mother has attained legendary status in our culture. If you ever display what many see as perfectly reasonable concern for your child's well-being, or celebrate your child's achievements too zealously, you may be told you're behaving like a 'Jewish Mother'. So far, not so problematic , but there's a darker side to the way these women have been depicted by American and British comedians. The Jewish mother is too often shown as expert in inflicting guilt on all members of the family. So how did Jewish women in particular get lumbered with such a bittersweet reputation? Joyce Antler is the Jewish mother of two daughters, and a professor at Brandeis University near Boston. She听tells听Faith Lawrence how she set about investigating the stereotype in her book 'You Never Call, You Never Write' .

You Never Call! You Never Write!: A History of the Jewish Mother, by Joyce Antler, is published by OUP USA. ISBN-10: 0195341430
