Has gender selected abortion come to an end?
NGOs have been warning for years that India faces a demographic crisis because of the practice of aborting female foetuses. It was made illegal fifteen years ago, but studies since then have consistently shown that far fewer girls are born in the country than boys. However,听new research endorsed by the local government in Delhi has announced that in 2008, more girls were born in the city than boys. The government has attributed the change to a new scheme whereby parents are given a cash bonus for every female child they produce. But some campaigners are sceptical about the actual figures. Jane discusses the issues with the Delhi government鈥檚 Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, and Dr Ranjana Kumari from the Centre for Social Research in Delhi. |
