Iran鈥檚 first female minister 07 Sept 2009
An important step for women in the Islamic Republic

The first Iranian female cabinet minister has just been appointed since the foundation of the Islamic Republic thirty years ago. The new Health Minister, Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi was one of eighteen nominations for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad鈥檚 new cabinet to be approved - two other women were rejected. Marzieh says her selection as health minister is an 'important step' for Iranian women. To discuss her appointment and what it means for women in Iran, Jane is joined by Kasra Naji special correspondent for 大象传媒 Persian Television and Ziba Mir-Hosseini the Iranian anthropologist and Researcher at the Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law, at SOAS, University of London.
