Health
Egg donation 14 December 2009
A human egg
Should donors receive more compensation?

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has agreed to consider whether reimbursement paid to egg donors should be increased. At the moment, women who donate their eggs can receive up to 拢250 for each course of donation. But with a national shortage of donated eggs -听which means some couples go abroad for fertility treatment -听is there a need to increase this amount? Or would this lead to a situation where women are encouraged to sell their eggs for financial gain? Jane is joined by Professor Lisa Jardine, chair of听the HFEA, and Professor Alison Murdoch, head of听the Newcastle Fertility Centre.
