How widely has caste prejudice been imported to Britain from the Indian sub-continent?
In India the caste system has existed for more than 3000 years. Beneath the four main castes is the Dalits, or so-called untouchables. They are said to suffer discrimination, exploitation and often violence. Now a new report published by the 'Anti Caste Discrimination Alliance' suggests that caste discrimination is widespread in Britain听- brought over here by the Indian diaspora. It could affect tens of thousands of people in the workforce, healthcare and education who suffer prejudice from other castes. Anti-Caste Campaigners are trying to get a change to the Equality Bill to outlaw unfair practices and discrimination. Just how widely has caste prejudice been imported to Britain from the Indian sub-continent? Jane is joined by Meena Varma, from the Dalit Solidarity Network听and Annapurna Waughray, Senior Lecturer in International Law and Human Rights, School of Law, Manchester Metropolitan University to discuss the issues.
