Saharawi Women of the Western Sahara 1st March 2010
Education in the refugee camps

The mainly听desert territory in north-west Africa, Western Sahara is the subject of a decades-long dispute between Morocco and the Algerian-backed Polisario Front.听听In听1975, Morocco occupied Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, and women and children poured over the border into Algeria to escape the fighting. 33 years on, up to 200,000 people are still in the refugee camps. Despite the difficulties of living in the camps and in exile, education for the women there has thrived. Literacy rates soared and many women became highly educated. However now there is concern that this success story is under threat and their skills and qualifications are going to waste. Beatrice Newbery reports from the Dahjla refugee camp in Western Sahara.
