It was during the Crimean War that the first war reporting sparked concern about the horrors of conflict. The first peace activists can be traced back to then. The recent events in Afghanistan show that pacifism is still a hot issue, generating angry debate.
In the next of our series about Women who made a difference, Sybil Oldfield, the author of Women Humanitarians, and Helen Rappaport, the author of the Encyclopaedia of Women Social Reformers reveal that, as you might expect, women pacifists have not had an easy time.
Helen Rappaport is the author of: Encyclopaedia of Women Social Reformers, published by ABC-CLIO, ISBN 1-57607-101-4
Sybil Oldfield is the author of: Women Humanitarians, A Biographical Dictionary of British Women Active between 1900 and 150, published by Continuum, ISBN 0 8264 4962 X
