Food
Damsons 21 Sept 2006
After the second world war there were tens of thousands of damson trees scattered throughout the Lyth Valley in Cumbria, its limestone soil was perfectly suited to them. But the taste for damson jam at tea began to decline and as bad weather killed off trees they weren't replaced. An Association was set up to save them and they now number just a few thousand, but the road through the valley is still busy with stalls selling the fruit to travellers on the way to and from Windermere. Vicky Barratt is a producer of damson gin and member of the Westmorland Damson Association. Reporter听Jill Hopkins went to meet her.
