Catherine the Great's diamonds 13 May 2009
Catherine the Great
V&A Jewellery

Catherine the Great was the 18th century empress of Russia for more than 30 years. She had an unhappy marriage, a string of lovers, expanded her territory and patronised the arts – and had a fine line in fabulous jewellery. Corinne Julius saw some of her diamonds when she met Beatriz Chadour Sampson, consultant curator of the new Jewellery Gallery at the V&A.
