Throughout the twentieth century most people's instinct was to turn away from death.
Prior to that, death was the axis around which British society revolved and Queen Victoria became the most famous widow of her age.
Now in the 21st century there is evidence of a reclaiming of ritual. But will it make it easier for us to mourn and does today's society still need formal mourning structures?
Jenni discusses the end of the death taboo with Kate Berridge, author of Vigor Mortis and Jo Wagerman, President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews. Vigor Mortis - The End of the Death Taboo (Profile Books, ISBN: 186197 177-X, 拢17.99).
