When she was in her 60s, photographer Mirella Ricciardi was dropped by light aircraft into the Amazon jungle armed only with her camera.
Despite not speaking any local languages, she was able to gain the trust of three different Amazon tribes, the Kampa, the Maruba and the Yanomami and the photographs she took of them give an intimate insight into their daily life, ceremonial preparations and family duties.
Ten years on, these pictures have been brought together for an exhibition Hidden Amazon and Mirella tells Jenni how her travels in Brazil still influence her life.
Hidden Amazon is on from 31st October until 16th November 2001 at Gallery 32 at the Brazilian Embassy, 32 Green Street, London W1.
Open Mon-Fri 1000-1800, Sat 1100-1700. Free admission. In 1991, Mirella Ricciardi brought out a book on her Amazon Journey called Vanishing Amazon (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, ISBN: 0-297-83089-9).
