Elizabeth Anscombe is thought of by some as the greatest English philosopher of her generation. She helped change the course of moral philosophy with her examination of ethics. Anscombe was a pupil of Ludwig Wittgenstein in Cambridge and became a close friend of his. She arrived in Oxford after the second world war at a time when little was thought of Wittgenstein's philosophy and even less was thought of female philosophers.
In 1941 she met and married her husband, the Oxford Philosopher, Professor Peter Geach, with whom she had seven children.
Elizabeth Anscombe died on 5th of January this year.
Sarah Woolman spoke to one of her ex-students Dr Rosalinde Hursthouse, and her old Oxford colleague the philosopher Professor Philippa Foot.
