The subject of Afghanistan is bound to dominate the General Assembly of the United Nations which is meeting for its general debate today in New York.

Many countries are discussing the kind of regime which could replace the Taliban, and there is growing concern that the women of Afghanistan will be ignored in any successor government.
Martha Kearney went to Washington DC last week, and met politicians who have been putting forward Congress resolutions in support of Afghani women's groups and their involvement in any new government.
The resolutions are part of a campaign by the American women's group, the Feminist Majority. At their press conference on Capitol Hill, the politicians, Republican and Democrat alike, were sporting a small piece of mesh on their lapels.
Feminist Majority President Eleanor Smiel, explained the significance of the badges to Martha.
