For the past ten years choreographers Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni have been working with young people from disadvantaged communities and townships in South Africa.
With these first time performers they have developed Umoja, a celebration of South African song and dance which opens tonight at London's Shaftesbury Theatre.
Umoja, which means 'The Spirit of Togetherness', incorporates the rhythms of tribal music, gumboot dancing and the jazz of Sophiatown with Gospel and Pantsula and was a big hit back in its native South Africa.
Henrietta Otley went the theatre to meet Todd, Thembi and the performers. Umoja will be at London's Shaftesbury Theatre from 15th November to 16th February 2002.
There is a CD that accompanies the piece called Umoja (STIFCD026).
