Mary Peters Wednesday 12 December 2001
Mary Peters chose the Pentathlon - which consists of the 200m, the shot put, hurdles, long jump and high jump, because she believed the sum of the five disciplines would give her a better chance of winning.

For her sixteenth birthday, her father gave her two tons of sand to put in their back garden, to practice her jumping.
Seventeen years later she brought home a gold medal from the Munich Olympics.
Since her 1972 victory, Mary has worked tirelessly to promote sport - and yesterday she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Awards.
She joins Jenni on the line from Belfast.
