Nicky Bird Tuesday 12 February 2002
When Julia Margaret Cameron's daughter gave her a camera in 1863, photography was still trying to establish itself as an art form, and it was one that for ladies, was just another skill to add to piano playing and embroidery. Not so for Julia. She was intent on establishing herself as a professional artistic photographer.

Nicky Bird, herself a photographer, joins Jenni to talk about how successful Julia Margaret Cameron was as a 19th century photographer.
Julia Margaret Cameron's Herschel album can be seen at Insight: Collections & Research Centre at the NMPFT, Bradford.
