Madame de Charri猫re Friday 1 March 2002
Her heroines are all strong-willed women and her novels contributed to some of the earliest feminist writing. Belle de Charri猫re was a Dutch aristocrat who wrote in French with a talent for controversial novels that shocked the conventional salons of 18th century France and Switzerland.

Whilst working in Switzerland, James Chesterman became so interested in the lively Madame de Charri猫re that he wrote a book her. He tells Martha Kearney what it was about her that sparked his interest.
Madame de Charriere - Letters from Switzerland, edited and translated with a biography by James Chesterman, published by Carole Green Publishing ISBN 1 903479 03 7, 拢25
