FANYs 5 Wednesday 27 February 2002
The fifth in our series which looks at the lives of some of the women who joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry during WW2. An all-female corps created in 1907, they still bear the distinctive acronym, the FANYs. Primarily used as a first aid link between fighting units and field hospitals, during WW2 many FANYS went on to work in the SOE, the Special Operations Executive.

Margaret Pawley's book In Obedience to Instructions tells of the FANYs who like herself worked at secret communications bases in North Africa and Italy. The Special Operations Executive welcomed women with a second European language but when she was recruited no-one had picked up on Margaret's fluent German.
Martyn Cox went to meet Margaret and find out what happend when she was sent to Cairo as a coder.
In Obedience to Instructions by Margaret Pawley is published by Pen & Sword Books / Leo Cooper; ISBN: 0850526337, 拢19.95
