Eleanor Marx the youngest daughter of Karl Marx, was a feminist and radical socialist who never flinched from confrontation.
A very intelligent child, she was mainly taught by her father, who conversed with her in both French and German and treated her as a friend and companion.
Her personal life, however, was far more complex. Her free union with the socialist Edward Aveling, ended up with her suicide at the age of 43. This relationship is explored in a new play, the Crystal Den, which opens in London this week. The Crystal Den is published by Oberon Books. and is on stage at the New End Theatre in Hampstead, London, NW3.
