When the first women's refuge in the United Kingdom opened its door in 1971, discussing violence in the home was considered a taboo.
Now, despite greater awareness and changes in the law, many believe that domestic violence is on the increase. Two women are still killed in this country every week by a former or current partner.
Refuges still remain the cornerstone of provision for women who are fleeing domestic violence. Yet, some are arguing that the time has come for a wider strategy to provide community protection for women. Sheila discusses the calls for change with Sandra Horley from Refuge and Jan Pursell from Zero Centre. Sandra Horley and Cheri Booth QC "Why charming men can make dangerous lovers."
