Child Rescuers
In our continuing series on the lives of woman humanitarians Jennifer Chevalier investigates the plight of the Child Rescuers.
One of the most important movements to help poor children in the 19th Century was the Ragged School movement. The best known schools were run by men like Dr Christian Barnardo, but many were run by women, such as early pioneer Mary Carpenter. The Encyclopaedia of Women Social Reformers, is published by ABC-CLIO. ISBN:157607 - 101-4.
Sybil Oldfield is the author of 'Women Humanitarians, a biographical Dictionary of Births Women Active between 1900 and 1950', which is published by Continuum. ISBN 08264 4962 X.
