For poor women living in rural Asia, attending school can involve travelling long distances, so going to university is usually out of the question. And many ask why they should continue to study when there are few job opportunities at the end of it?
But now plans are being drawn up for an Asian University for Women, based in Bangladesh, that aims to create a network of educated women throughout the region.
Sheila talks to Karmal Ahmed, one of the project directors, and to a Delhi academic, Oma Chakravarti, about her experiences of motivating women in higher education.
