As far as British twentieth century composers go you may well be familiar with the work of Britten and Tippett, but you are less likely to know the music of Elisabeth Maconchy.
Dame Elizabeth, who died in 1994, composed an impressive body of music for both professional musicians and amateurs. While some have found her work challenging she has contributed a great deal to British music, particularly in the field of chamber music.
Her daughter, Nicola Lefanu, is also a composer and is Professor of Music at the University of York. Henrietta Otley talked to her about her mother's work, and to performer Diana Ambache.
