In the past, many doctors have questioned the validity of ME, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as an illness. However, last November a report by the Chief Medical Officer gave it official recognition.
There are an estimated 150 to 250,000 people in the UK with ME and, it's thought, that as many as 20,000 of these may be children.
Claudia Hammond reports on an illness which often leads to children and young people missing years of school.
