Hannah Crafts Tuesday 18 June 2002
Last year a US academic discovered a handwritten manuscript of the earliest novel ever written by a slave.

Hannah Craft's book dates from the 1850's and it tells the story of a slave who escapes her cruel owners by disguising herself as a man.
To mark the British publication of Hannah Craft's 301 page epic, reporter, Jennifer Chevalier, went to find out more about its author and why it took so long to recover The Bondwoman's Narrative.
The Bondwoman's Narrative by Hannah Crafts, published by Virago Press; ISBN: 1860490131
