Madame Geneva Wednesday 19 June 2002
The history of gin or "geneva" in the 18th Century is the subject of Patrick Dillon's new book.

The Much Lamented Death of Madame Geneva - The 18th Century Gin Craze reveals how serious the addiction became, particularly in Hogarth's London and particularly for women.
Patrick is joined by fellow historian, Jenny Uglow, author of Hogarth: A Life and A World to discuss the story of Madam Geneva's rise and fall.
The Much Lamented Death of Madame Geneva - The 18th Century Gin Craze by Patrick Dillon, published by Rview; ISBN 0747235457
Hogarth: A Life and a World by Jenny Uglow, published by Faber and Faber; ISBN: 0571169961
