Mrs X Friday 28 June 2002
Mrs X was sexually assaulted, strangled and beaten by her own husband. Her ribs were broken, both eyes blacked and a lung punctured in the attack. She spent four days in hospital, but his punishment was a community rehabilitation order as a string of character references led the judge to decide that the former Professor was a man of previously impeccable character.

Horrified by the sentence and by a legal system she felt had failed her, his wife has chosen to break her silence and speak out.
Martha also speaks to the Solicitor General, Harriet Harman, about why she chose to take this case to appeal - a step which resulted in the retired professor being sent to prison for six months.
