Monsieur D'Eon Friday 13 September 2002
Could one of Europe's earliest feminists have been a man?

Monsieur D'Eon enjoyed a glittering career as a soldier, diplomat and spy but lived the latter half of his life as Madame D'Eon. His true gender as a man was only confirmed on his death bed.
Amy Oliver, who is appearing in the stage production of Monsieur D'Eon and Clare Harman join Martha to discuss whether he was a champion for the emancipation of women or simply looking for 15 minutes of fame.
Monsieur D'Eon, Union Theatre, 204 Union Street, London SE1. Box Office: 020 7261 9876
