The artistic career of Eva Hesse lasted only ten years. She was 34 when she died from a brain tumour in 1969, but she's viewed as an important figure in the art of the post war period. Her short life was marked by tragedy.
She was born in Hamburg in 1936. When she was only three she was sent with her older sister Helen on a children's transport to Holland to escape Nazi persecution. Her parents followed and the family eventually made a new life in New York, but when Eva was 10, her mother committed suicide.
Rachel Schofield has been to a new exhibition at Tate Modern together with Eva's sister Helen.
