Pregnancy Portraits Wednesday 11 December 2002
Portrait of an Unknown Lady circa 1595, oil on wood, artist Martin Gheeraerts II, Picture courtesy of Tate Britain
Marcus Gheeraerts produced some of the most haunting and beautiful portraits in British Art and his most celebrated sitter was Queen Elizabeth I.

One of his pictures, Portrait of an Unknown Lady, caught the attention of Karen Hearn, a curator at Tate Britain, as it was a good example of the surprising English genre which developed at that time - the pregnancy portrait.
Karen Hearn joins Jenni to explain why these portraits suddenly stopped in the 1630's and why so little research has been done on them.
Marcus Gheeraerts Exhibition at Tate Britain runs from 2 December until 20 April 2003
