We look at the situation facing some 59,000 children in this country who are 'looked after'. They might be in a home, in a foster family or with a family member who's not a parent - but why do half of those in care get no GCSEs at all and why do 1 in 8 move foster home more than twice a year?
Claudia Hammond visits Lesley, a mother whose child was in danger of going into care and The Bradford Support Care Scheme to find out if more support for families in crisis would help reduce the number of 'looked after' children. Claudia also speaks with two care leavers who tell us what it was like to grow up in care.
Penny Thompson of Sheffield Social Services, Phil Frampton of Care Leavers, ATD charity activist Moraene Roberts plus Rhys Hughes & Dawn Howley - both of the foster care system - join Jenni to discover why there is an increase in the number of children in care....
...followed by the Minister of State for Health, Jacqui Smith, who joins Jenni to discuss the political issues. Tell us your views
