There is probably no more versatile a material than denim - in the past 130 years what started as a humble worker's cloth became the defining fabric of the 20th century. And it's hard to imagine its appeal ever diminishing with its now iconic status and designers constantly coming up with new ways to make jeans fashionable.
They are worn proudly by presidents and punks, cowboys and congressmen, actors and athletes, hippies and hard rockers. Jennifer Chevalier looks back at the history of denim with the author of The Blue Jean, Alice Harris. Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalks, by Graham Marsh and Paul Trynka, Fashion Editor June Marsh, Published by Aurum Press, ISBN: 1854107917 The Blue Jean, by Alice Harris, Published by Thames and Hudson, ISBN: 0500511063
