Matriachal Society Monday 31 March 2003
Yesterday was Mother's Day, celebrating the nation's mothers. Today in the UK more women head households in than ever before and the numbers are rising all the time. 70 per cent of all women go out to work and, for a time, the country was led by one of the greatest matriarchs of all time - Margaret Thatcher. So can Britain now describe itself as a matriarchal society?

Natasha Walter is the author of The New Feminism and a columnist for the Independent. Aminatta Forna is the author of The Mother of all Myths. Both Aminatta Forna and Natasha Walter join Jenni to discuss the meaning of matriachy today.
