Until the end of the nineteenth century, learning how to embroider was an essential part of a young girl's education. Today however there is less of a need to darn socks and so fewer people can claim any kind of skill in it. Instead, embroidering has become an art form.
Jenni talks to the curator of a new centre of embroidery in London and to the co-ordinator of an exhibition on embroidery, Material Works off the Wall. Audrey Walker's Selected Retrospective 1951 - 2003, 24 March - 16 May 2003, Constance Howard Resource and Research Centre in Textiles Material Works Off The Wall, 6 April - 9 May 2003, Museum of Iron Ironbridge Gorge
