Designed by Vanbrugh in 1699 and immortalised on television as the magnificent setting for Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, Castle Howard has always been famous for its treasures - particularly its paintings by Canaletto, Holbein and Gainsborough.
During the 2nd World War it was also home to scores of girls from Queen Margaret's School, sent inland to escape the dangers of coastal air raids. The girls themselves became immortalised in Castle Howard's history when a huge fire swept through the house in 1940, destroying nearly 20 rooms, as well as its famous dome.
They mounted a rescue operation to save the priceless paintings inside, and now a special tour to commemorate their actions has started at the house. Jill Hopkins takes a tour around the house.
