Whitby Jet Monday 25 August 2003
One of the richest and best seams of jet in the world is based at Whitby, 20 miles north of Scarborough.

Over the years the stone has fallen in an out of favour, reaching it's zenith in the Victorian period when it was popularised by the Queen.
Claire Jenkins went out to meet 90 year old Mabel McMillan, whose grandfather, born in 1844, was a Whitby jet craftsman and Lindsay Allason-Jones, director of Archaeological Museums in Newcastle joins Jenni to tell her more about the history of jet, what it is and why Whitby?
