Not only was Lady Mary Wortley Montague credited with bringing back smallpox innoculation to Britain, she was also a prolific writer of diaries, essays and poems and translated plays from French and Latin. Her rebuttal of writer and essayist Alexander Pope resulted in her exile.
She was a gifted linguist and wrote the first English version of a play by the French writer, Marivaux. She called it Simplicity and a new production opens tonight at the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond.
Judi Herman spoke to Dr Roz Ballester, Fellow in English at Mansfield College, Oxford, who lectures on Lady Mary's life and work, and Dr Lesley Hall, archivist at the Library of the Wellcome Institute for History and Understanding of Medicine.
