Women's Relationships With Their Saris Monday 13 October 2003
women in sari
There's a Hindu riddle which asks, 'Is the woman in the sari or the sari in the woman?'

On the surface, the sari is just a piece of cloth - 6 yards of material. When so much of the rest of the world has been seduced by the more practical clothing of the West, why do Indian women, wherever they live, continue to wrap themselves in their saris?
Anjana Sharma goes to Southall in West London to hear from women who live there why the sari has endured, and shares her own experiences of wearing a sari.
Mukulika Banerjee and Daniel Miller join Jenni to talk about their new book, The Sari.
The Sari by Mukulika Banerjee and Daniel Miller, Berg Publishers, ISBN 1859737323
