Celebrating Christmas 10 December 2003
children's nativity play
Everywhere you look, there are Christmas decorations and Christmas trees, the shops are full of Christmas presents and Father Christmas.

In primary schools children are playing Mary, Joseph, an angel or a shepherd in school nativity plays and secondary schools are having their carol concerts. But what if you don't believe in the message of Christmas.

For many people including Muslims, Jews and Hindus, Eid, Hanukkah or Diwali are celebrated instead. But regardless of your religion, should you celebrate Christmas to help your children to fit in?

Nirmala Parmer, a teacher of Hinduism and poet Yvonne Green who only celebrates Jewish festivals, join Jenni to discuss the issues.

Yvonne Green will be giving a poetry reading on 5 January at 8pm at The Troubadour Coffee House, 265 Old Brompton Road London SW5.
