Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ida Cox are amongst those who wrote their own songs, covering subjects considered shocking, but drawn from their own experiences - drink, drugs, prostitution, poverty and sex.
Poet Rommi Smith and Geraldine Connor, director of Blues in the Night, a new play telling the story of three women through the lyrics of the greatest blues songs, join Jenni to discuss why women were so central to the genre.
'Blues in the Night' is at the West Yorkshire Playhouse until 24 January
