New laws for Moroccan women |

Morocco has just passed sweeping changes to family law which give the country's women far more power over their personal and family lives.
In 1999, after the death of his father, King Mohammed VI promised to modernise the country and improve the situation of women and this new law raises the age of marriage, gives women the right to initiate divorce proceedings and effectively outlaws polygamy.
While Morocco is known as one of the more liberal Arab countries, inequality is still deeply entrenched in its customs and laws and it has taken the King 4 years to get the law past the Islamist conservatives.
But as Nicola Fell discovered, even now it's been passed, society remains divided over the issues.
